Pumpkin Seeds, Soil, and Sunlight: Setting the Foundation Early
Share
Here at Bay Baby Produce, we believe that everything worth growing starts with intention. Nestled in the flatlands of the Skagit River Delta in the Pacific Northwest, we have spent more than 25 years learning that the quality of what ends up on your doorstep is determined long before harvest season arrives.
It starts with a seed, the right soil, and enough sunlight to coax something remarkable out of the ground. Whether we are growing certified organic winter squash, unique ornamental pumpkins, or the varieties behind our custom-painted Pumpkin Patch Pals, the early work is what makes everything possible.
Why the Foundation Stage Matters Most
Experienced growers will tell you that most problems showing up at harvest were actually created at planting. A poor start produces a weak plant, and no amount of attention later in the season fully compensates for a shaky foundation. That is why we put so much thought and care into the earliest stages of our growing process, long before anything visible is happening above the soil.
Selecting the Right Seeds
Not all pumpkin seeds are created equal.
At Bay Baby Produce, seed selection is taken seriously because the variety you plant determines the shape, color, texture, and character of everything that follows.
Our Ornamental Pumpkin Seed Kits give home growers access to the same thoughtfully curated varieties we rely on here in Skagit Valley, including fan favorites like Tiger Stripe, Casper, Tango, Bumpy, Squidmo, and Snowbaby. These are the exact same farm-tested seeds we grow across our 800 acres. When you start with our seeds, you are not guessing at what might grow, you are planting varieties we know intimately at every stage of their life cycle.

Preparing the Soil
Pumpkins are heavy feeders. They need rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter to support the vigorous root systems and sprawling vines that are characteristic of the plant. We work our soil carefully ahead of each season, amending it to ensure the right balance of nutrients, drainage, and microbial activity.
For home growers starting with our seed kits, we always recommend preparing your bed weeks in advance, giving amendments time to integrate before seeds go in the ground. Each kit includes region-specific planting guidance to help you get it right from day one.

Sunlight: The Non-Negotiable Ingredient
Pumpkins are not a shade-tolerant crop. They need full sun, ideally six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily to develop strong vines, healthy foliage, and well-formed fruit. Here in the Skagit River Delta, we are fortunate to have long summer days that give our crops the light exposure they need to thrive.
When selecting a planting location at home, prioritize the sunniest spot available and resist the temptation to tuck pumpkins into partially shaded corners of the garden. Light is the one input you simply cannot supplement.
Timing Your Planting Right
Starting too early in cold soil invites rot and sluggish germination. Starting too late cuts into the long growing season pumpkins require. In the Pacific Northwest, we typically aim to get seeds in the ground after the last frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed consistently.
For those growing from our ornamental pumpkin seed kits, the packaging includes guidance tailored to help you get the timing right for your region, so you are not left guessing when to start.

From Our Farm to Your Home
Everything we grow at Bay Baby Produce, from our 18-count white and orange mini pumpkins to our USDA Certified Organic winter squash (certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture), reflects the care we put in from the very beginning. Our custom-painted Pumpkin Patch Pals and decorative ornamentals carry the character of a farm that has been paying attention at every stage of the process since 1999. Founded by Michele Youngquist and Liz Mitchell, Bay Baby Produce has grown from a small patch of dirt and a dream into a farm spanning 800 acres, shipping to retailers nationwide and as far as Taiwan, Dubai, Japan, and Mexico.
Every pumpkin is washed, graded for size uniformity, and carefully packed in our 55,000 sq. ft. facility before it ships, whether that is to your front porch or to a retail partner near you.
Setting the foundation early is not glamorous work. It does not show up in the harvest photos or the fall tabletop arrangements; but it is the reason those arrangements look the way they do. At Bay Baby Produce, we would not have it any other way.
