How to Plant Ornamental Pumpkin Seeds for the Best Results
Preparing for a Great Harvest
Start planting after the danger of frost has passed—typically late April to early June—when the soil temperature is at least 70°F. Choose well-drained soil in a spot with full sun and add organic matter or well-rotted manure for optimal growth.
Planting Tips:
Sow seed 1 inch deep
Space 2–3 feet apart
Ensure alot of space for your pumpkin vines to sprawl
Use plastic mulches or grass clippings to retain moist soil
Keep the soil evenly moist (about an inch of water per week) and water in the early morning to prevent airborne fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Watch for squash bugs, white spots, and monitor first leaves closely.
When your first true leaves appear, thin to the strongest seedling. As female flowers form (you’ll notice a tiny fruit at the base of the flower), remove row covers to encourage pollination. Soon after, your small pumpkins will begin to form!
To avoid rot, slide a piece of cardboard under developing fruit, especially in late afternoon or early evening when moisture may linger.
Harvest Time: Your Pumpkins Are Ready for the Spotlight
Expect a great harvest by late September or early October. Use a sharp knife to clip pumpkins, leaving a few inches of stem for longer storage. With proper care, your pumpkins will last well into the season, making them perfect for both decorating and gifting.
