Mini Pumpkin Place Cards: A Simple Guide to a Welcoming Fall Table

A small pumpkin at each place setting brings fall color to the table before the first dish arrives. Add a guest's name, and that little decoration becomes a useful part of the welcome. Mini pumpkin place cards work especially well when the names are easy to read and the pumpkins leave enough room for plates and glasses.

At Bay Baby Produce, we love the way real pumpkins make a seasonal table feel personal. You do not need an elaborate arrangement to get started. Choose your palette, make one sample, and use that sample to guide the rest.

Step 1: Choose Pumpkins That Suit Your Table

Orange mini pumpkins bring a traditional harvest color to wood, cream linens, and simple greenery. White mini pumpkins offer a softer starting point for neutral table settings. Either can work with handwritten tags, printed names, or small folded cards.

Test the Footprint

Set a pumpkin beside a plate and glass before choosing the final position. A place card should help a guest find their seat without taking over the setting. If the table feels crowded, position the pumpkin just above the plate or use a narrow name card beside it.

Natural pumpkins vary in shape and size. Pair each one with the space it will occupy instead of expecting a perfectly identical row.

Step 2: Pick a Name-Card Method

A Folded Card Beside the Pumpkin

This is the simplest approach. Write or print the name on a folded card and stand it beside the pumpkin. It requires no attachment and lets you change the seating plan without redoing the decorations. Use cardstock that stands upright on its own.

A Removable Ribbon Tag

Punch a hole in a paper tag and thread a light ribbon through it. If the stem shape allows it, rest a loose loop around the stem without tightening or tugging. Keep the tag lightweight and support the pumpkin by its body whenever you move it. If the loop slips off or the stem feels fragile, use the folded-card option instead.

A Name Written on the Pumpkin

Writing directly on the surface can look lovely, but it is less forgiving. Test your chosen pen on one pumpkin first and follow the product's surface and drying instructions. Avoid assuming the ink will wipe off cleanly if the seating plan changes. A removable paper tag is the easier choice when you need flexibility.

Step 3: Make One Complete Place Setting

Arrange a plate, napkin, glass, pumpkin, and finished name card as they will appear at the gathering. Sit down and check the view. Can you read the name comfortably? Does the pumpkin interfere with the glass? Can guests move it easily if they need more room?

Take a reference photo of your sample for whoever helps set the table. That one image can prevent a lot of last-minute rearranging.

Step 4: Organize Names Before Assembly

Check spelling against the guest list, then group the cards by table. Keep a few blank cards and the same pen or ribbon available for changes. If the pumpkins will also be favors, include a small note telling guests they may take theirs home.

Begin with one pumpkin per assigned seat. For larger gatherings, use our mini pumpkin event-quantity guide to account for centerpieces and other display areas as well.

Turn your guest count into boxes

Our orange mini pumpkins come in 18-count boxes. For 24 place settings, two boxes provide 36 pumpkins, leaving 12 for a centerpiece, a welcome table, or extras. Count any other display areas before deciding how many boxes to order.

Step 5: Keep the Setup Gentle

Store the pumpkins somewhere dry and ventilated before decorating. Avoid pins or cuts when a freestanding card will do the job. Carry pumpkins by the body and inspect them before putting them on the table.
